ARTIST STATEMENT

self_portrait_1.jpg

Inspired by the art of my late father and other artists, I have always had an affinity for the medium of oil paint and for figurative art. Having worked in the video game industry for so long, I feel called to break free from the direction of others and from the virtual realm to shift my career into the more visceral and tactile medium of oil painting. I strive to create art that is more than just a concept. I prefer to produce art that is aesthetically pleasing to the eye and full of vibrant colors. What interests me are pieces that you can look at multiple times and notice something new with each view. I design art in which the figures are communicating subtle messages, almost as if they have a relationship to the viewer. As humans, we like identifiable patterns and perfection, but I play with breaking up the formula with some mess and spontaneity. Many of my current works include gold leaf because I love the added light and dimension that it brings to the painting.

My current goal is meant to capture the inner divinity of persons radiating outward in moments of humanness. It is reflected through the shimmering of gold and the subtle emotional expressions. The geometric patterns are a particular focus, meant to represent the containment of the chaos of the human condition. It asks a question about how we pattern our lives, and what we see versus the filter through which others see us. Each piece has its own story, but overall, this collection evolved from a love of contemporary style and of figurative art.
